Challenge

Registration

  • Team registration is still open (and will be for a while) – if you have been considering registering another team, it is not too late.
  • Youth registration: This season it is especially important that ALL team members get signed up via the FIRST website, and that ALL sign up at the beginning of the season – preferably before the first team meeting. Please impress this on the parents/guardians of your team’s members. (Part of the reason is that signing up also means acknowledging a possible danger due to COVID 19.)

Workshops

  • A new workshop has been posted on FIRST BC’s youtube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZakmEaNehJI .  This is for programming with SPIKE Prime and was done by Kevin Liu in Vancouver.
  • You may also find workshops of interest here, all by Victor Fan in Vancouver: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCU-O-xDc8Vxmd7wndr0wRcA/videos.

Mentors

  • Does your team need a mentor? Our FIRST Senior Mentor Barish knows a group of UBC students in Vancouver who would like to assist FLL Challenge teams. Please contact him at Barish Golland <bgolland@firstinspires.org> if you are interested.
  • FIRST also has the new FIRST Mentor Network, accessible from your FIRST dashboard (under the volunteering tab) – here you can look for mentors from almost anywhere.

Next Event

  • We’ll have an Online Coach Get-together: A chance to “meet” and to talk about coaching and everything FIRST-related on Monday, November 30 at 7 pm via RingCentral
Topic: FLL Challenge Coach Get-TogetherTime: Nov 30, 2020 07:00 PM Pacific Time
  • Please email Uleslie@firstpartners.org for log-in info

  • It seems that so far, most mentors are offering their help to the older kids instead of to those on Explore teams. I think this may be because they don’t really know how they could be of help to the younger teams. So if you, as an Explore coach, provide some details (such as: “We need someone to explain >centre of gravity< and how to find it so that 6-year-olds can understand” or “we need someone to teach our 6-year-old kids how ocean temperature can be measured at 3000 m depth” ), would-be mentors might rise to the challenge…
